[personal profile] danabren left a comment on my post about Catholic aesthetics/music/Gregorian chants that unlocked a core 90s scene memory for many of us: constantly hearing Enigma at every damn kink or kink-adjacent play party.

This led me to see what songs turn up on "Enigma Radio" on Spotify. Guess what the first song was? Go on, guess.

Ah, good 'ol "Caribbean Moon Blue".

There are days when I think about trying to explain to Kids Today what sort of music was played for the first 30-60 minutes at Ye Olde Spooky Clubs because I'm pretty sure they'd never believe me.

Over the past week we watched both Conclave and Immaculate. Both were fun, even if I don't understand the section of fandom that looked at Conclave and said "YES, let's write smut". Not my beautiful cake, but rock on you crazy diamonds.

Immaculate wasn't groundbreaking, and actually kind of predictable, but it was still enjoyable. And yet another entry in the "Yep, I like Catholic-themed horror" category; look I really like the aesthetics and music of the Church. As an institution, fuck no. All the art it's created? Yes. What this means is I bought the soundtrack on bandcamp, and need to look up the soundtrack for Conclave to see if I want it. (I probably don't, as I prefer my Latin liturgical music sung by female voices. As evidence, I listen to this Gregorian chants female voices playlist on Spotify fairly often.) Which leads me to one of my favorite set of tweets:

Dad update

Finally got to talk to Dad, yay! He's doing okay. Well, except for the part where "I can work in the yard for about 10 minutes, and then I have to rest for 45", and his cardiologist says, "Recovery is a process, Bob, and there's no definitive timeline". Which, sure, that makes sense, but he had the cardioversion at the end of March, so I'm a little dubious. Dad sees the cardiologist next week, and I told him to feel free to gently threaten the cardiologist with having to talk to me, and I'm a lot meaner than my Dad.

But things are going okay for him and his Ladylove. They are currently a household with no kitties, as Sniggle passed on a few months ago. Dad says he's been able to resist looking at kittens so far, but he'll probably give in soon.

Hilariously, he lectured me about looking after myself, then realized what he was saying. In that pause I said, "Gosh, I wonder where I learned THAT from", and he had the grace to laugh. I told him I'd try to be better if he did. We'll see how that goes.

Ridiculous sewing project

This is something I've been thinking about for a few years, and I've finally decided to try it. I had the Madwoman in the Attic make a version of these "pants" in black lawn. I'm going to sew layers of black organza ruffle trim (the good stuff with fishing line in the hem to make the ruffles nigh-uncrushable) up to the knees on each leg. If my theory is right, then I will have a pair of long bloomers that are also a petticoat!

I will, of course, report back on how this works.

Last night I saw Sparks for the first time.

Some back-and-forth was required at the outset - I bought an e-ticket from TicketBastard, which usually means a ticket sent by email that can be displayed on a device or printed. However, TicketBastard decided thay they mean mobile tickets, i.e. those that can only be used by displaying them on their official app on a smartphone on arrival at the venue. No screenshots, no printing (and no wifi at the venue). Contacting TicketBastard they said that there was no alternative, and that the venue wouldn't accept anything else. Hammersmith's box office were, in contrast, friendly, professional, and helpful, and said "no problem", which was a relief.

I'd forgotten just how steeply-raked the floor of Hammersmith was, at least until you reached the front quarter. At least they've got removeable seats now - I remember when it was all-seated, even seeing Megadeth in the early '90s. (Apparently the fixed seating was only replaced by the removeable seats in 2003.)

No support act, just doors at seven, and the headliners on at half eight, playing for an hour and forty-five minutes against a backdrop of colour-changing square LED frames, like a modernised 1980s Top Of The Pops set. The set was a good mix of songs from the new album and recognisable classics, and their eye for a catchy hook and chorus meant that singing along to the new songs wasn't a challenge. Sparks have been recording for longer than I've been alive, and first played the Apollo in 1974, and were as good at what they do as you'd expect, with a four-piece backing band, Ron dressed in black and scowling from behind his keyboard as is traditional, and Russell dancing about the stage in a red, white, and gold suit, swapping the jacket for a waistcoat partway through.

Opening with So May We Start, they continued with barely a pause through an eighteen-song set, briefly allowing Ron to get up from behind his keyboard to do vocals on Suburban Homeboy and to do a quick 'dance routine' during The Number One Song In Heaven. Russell's intro to Please Don't Fuck Up My World pointed out that it was even more relevant now than when originally released in 2020. Eventually they left the stage, but the backing band then reappeared, still towelling their heads and faces, and Russell and Ron returned for The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte and All That. There followed an impressive demonstration of mild embarrassment, as the band left, and the Maels stood on stage as the crowd clapped and cheered. It was obvious that they were waiting to leave the stage, but also that they didn't want to be rude and do so while the applause was still going strong. Eventually they were allowed to leave.

One advantage of gigs at Hammersmith is that the Capital Restuarant is open late and you can buy a lahmacun with salad for a few quid, which met the post-gig peckishness before heading home. (Another advantage is that, if I've got enough time, I can get there by tram and tube, avoiding the middle of London.)

(For full details of what they played, here's the setlist.)

Got my orthotics today. My foot still hurts. This is taking too long to sort itself out and I wish to register a complaint.

Lord Brock has figured out what time steroid dosing happens and has started reminding me about it because he knows he'll get treats immediately after. He still hates getting medicated, but he hates it so much less than the gabapentin (I think it tasted worse) that he will almost barely tolerate it and then happily snarffle up the treats once the dosing part is done with.

Roof repairs unlocked. Dude also does the kind of work needed for the stairs so he's going to give me a quote for that as well. AND he thinks he can work with his plumber to drop the sump pump into the floor properly so it takes up less space and won't leave an open water feature in the room. He send me some links with examples of what he wants to do, and honestly it would be a huge improvement.

Project raccoon did NOT go as originally planned. Original contractor had said that the stairs would just flip up so I could clean underneath them. No, not so much.

The problem is that the wooden stairs are basically a triangle set in a sunken concrete hole. The back/top of the stairs is supported by a piece of wood in the shape of a T. To get under them you have to pull the whole thing towards the interior door to make room behind the triangle to flip it up on it's back. Only the T isn't solid enough, when I tried it the bottom of the wood stayed in the same spot while the top cracked and splintered. I was able to climb to the top and kind of kick the T forward but not far enough to make room to flip it. So I could stand there and hold the stairs up, because they're not heavy, but I couldn't get under it at the same time.

Yesterday and today daughter came over to work on the yard, and this afternoon the ex-housemate & their wife dropped by to pick up some government forms that had been delivered to the house. So the four of us picked up the stairs bodily and moved them out of the staircase. The ex-housemate has anosmia, so they volunteered to shovel up the very very decayed raccoon. Garbage day isn't for another two weeks so we just dumped him out by the railroad tracks and covered him with dirt. And then shovelled up the accumulated mud and vermin that had collected under the stairs and dropped it in the same spot.

It was so gross, y'all. So gross. But it's out of my basement doorway now and it's in a spot where it will be unlikely to bother anybody except the occasional passing coyote.

The daughter and I spent the next three hours digging the drainage pit. I found the sand layer I was hoping for, and then underneath that (about four feet down) is a layer of a broken shist which I think will work even better. We have probably about 80% of the trench dug out - one more day should be enough to finish if off. Then I'll line it with cinderblocks and start filling it in with rocks. The trench is probably four times as big as I'll need to be in any normal year, but since 100-year storms are coming every 10 years now (and probably every 2 by the time I ever leave this house) it seems like a good investment of labour.

Entertainment was provided by a juvenile robin that realized all that turned earth was a worm goldmine and got increasingly braver about getting close enough to us to grab them as the day progressed.

Then we ate our own weight in pizza.

Needless to say, every part of me hurts after two days of digging, so I'm taking tomorrow off doing any more building/fixing things. Chores only. And I might check with the local massage clinic to see if they have a free spot because I know I'm going to feel like somebody worked me over with my own shovel.
