There was a fuel protest on the M4 the other day. I'm actually all for lowering the price of petrol even though it's a pollutant and a finite resource because I object to the government taxing people through the nose to travel when they aren't working to provide viable alternatives. (Click here to read about ethical petrol purchase or move to Germany and use a proper public transport network.) But yes. Anyway. The fuel protest. It was rubbish. I remember the protest a couple of years ago when a huge convoy of cars and lorries drove all the way from Swansea to Bristol at rush hour along 2 lanes of the M4. They travelled at 20mph and created a huge jam, which everyone cheered. Go them. A point well made with flags and banners and flashy lights. This time the police used the Public Order Act to stop that, so all I saw were about 25 lorries (complete with police escort) driving in single file towards Swansea at about 50mph. The opposite way to the bulk of the rush hour traffic. So what they essentially did was to take a totally unnecessary journey. I'll bet those petrol barons are quaking in their boots. "No! Please don't travel long distances for no reason at all! That would be awful!" Christ. If you're going to protest then do it properly. Don't be scared of men in high-vis jackets waving bits of paper. How are you supposed to change the system if you always do exactly what you're told? Imagine what the world would be like if that kid in Tiananmen Square had moved out of the way just because some man in a swanky hat told him to?

I was listening to Chaos Approved! earlier and an advert came on for a Hurricaine Relief single by Christian crooner J B Frederick. A few things struck me about this. Firstly that this was probably the ultimate in mistatched advertising - and secondly that one of the songs included on the advert was called 'Rain on me', which is probably the last thing you want if your house is 7 feet underwater. So I just had to visit his website to check I'd heard that right. And you'll never guess what... He's giving away free copies of his hurricaine relief single (retail value $4.99) when you buy his album. Surely that defeats the entire point of a charity record?
