On Friday, after a not-terribly-thrilling day of waiting in for the postman, we were joined at Chaos Towers by [livejournal.com profile] antigirl, [livejournal.com profile] vasic, [livejournal.com profile] krazyhousechick, [livejournal.com profile] daisychainsaw_, [livejournal.com profile] sarah_mum, [livejournal.com profile] oholiab and Liz. There was some haircutting, some drinking, some chit-chat and then... THE MIRACLE FRUIT EXPERIMENT!

The tablets are small and pink and have a logo on them like a flying rocket and you have to let them dissolve slowly on your tongue. They start off tasting chalky and disgusting but end up tasting more and more like sweets, which is pretty weird.

Earlier in the day, we'd acquired the world's oddest picnic in preparation:

First up was [livejournal.com profile] oholiab, who bravely dove straight in and took a *huge* bite from a raw onion. Admittedly, I should have read out the instructions first, which said that the effect is best on very bitter or very sour things. And as it turns out, onion still tastes like onion.

After this terribly unfortunate start, [livejournal.com profile] anti_girl was not put off and picked up a big slice of lemon. Amazingly, miracle fruit turns lemons into rather tasty oranges...

And then total picnic carnage descended. We manged to (sort of) keep a tab on results on a spreadsheet - For Science! I have done the best I can to translate the results here:

Carrots
Me: Tastes like nothing
[livejournal.com profile] vasic: Like soil!
[livejournal.com profile] lee_chaos: Like a working man's club!

Strawberries
Everyone agreed that MF made strawberries taste like the best strawberries ever! Totally worth the whole experiment!

Tabasco sauce
[livejournal.com profile] antigirl: like syrup and burning!

Pepper
We all agreed that it tasted almost the same, just sort of sweeter...

Tomatoes
Me: Like ordinary strawberries!

Radishes
Were still dull, if not duller. No-one finished a whole one!

Babybel
Boring old Babybel, which most people disliked anyway, turned into a lovely posh cheese, like one might purchase in a real Deli.

Soft Garlic Cheese
With the garlickyness all gone, the cheese tasted like 'creamy butter', (as described by [livejournal.com profile] antigirl

Vegetable Pakora
Rather less succesfully, with their spicyness gone, Vegetable Pakora became balls of texture, a bit like chewing a bit of old cardboard.

Chorizo Sausage
I'm normally a big fan of this one, but it was the first to be spat into the bin. A ball of texture with a rather unpleasant stingyness... On the second attempt, when the MF was starting to wear off, it tasted like licking a barbeque grill. Still not nice!

Chocolate Chip Cookie
Tesco's finest here, which are normally quite nice and sort of on the sugary side. They became almost toffee flavoured!

Smoking
[livejournal.com profile] vasic reported back on this one - no change at all :(

Fizzy drinks
Weirdly, MF made anything fizzy taste horrible and flat. Liz said that her can of coke tasted as if it had been left in the sun for a few hours and Summer Fruits Kopparberg tasted to me like a fermented box of fruit juice. [livejournal.com profile] oholiab's Cherry Coke was really weird and quite chemically.

Here's where we started mixing and things got really odd...

Coconut macaroon with pickled onion
With some people already enjoying the taste of pickle juice, [livejournal.com profile] oholiab and [livejournal.com profile] lee_chaos stepped into new and unexplored territory. This combination was apparently 'really nice'.

Here's [livejournal.com profile] lee_chaos looking a bit tentative before taking his first bite!

Pickled onion with parma violets, pepper and tabasco sauce
[livejournal.com profile] oholiab said this one was an 'amazing taste sensation', but was unable to tell whether it was anything to do with the tablet or not.

[livejournal.com profile] oholiab took a lot of care over presentation, making delicious mini-sushi...

Chorizo with chocolate and pickle juice
Again, we're reliant on [livejournal.com profile] oholiab, who said that the chocolate and meat 'truly mixed'. He could have been fibbing though, as he looked a bit shifty about it.

Jelly sweets and garlic cheese
[livejournal.com profile] lee_chaos: WHAT???

Chocolate Chip Cookie with Garlic Cheese
[livejournal.com profile] antigirl declared this one to be 'like cheesecake', so we all tried it. She was right! Delicious!

Unicum
It's better, but I still hate it. so did everyone else.

Gluhwein
[livejournal.com profile] antigirl: Like Buckfast and vinegar or a bad red wine (so not much change there really!)

Rum with a pickled onion, tobasco sauce and sherbert
It was absolutely sickening to see [livejournal.com profile] oholiab mix this, but it was a triumph! "OH MY GOD! I'VE ACCIDENTALLY MIXED SPICY PIMMS!" Not half bad actually :)

It's Spicy Pimms. Mmmmmmmm.

Neat Gin
Possibly our greatest trimuph, as we discovered that MF make neat gin taste 'rather palletable', in the words of [livejournal.com profile] vasic, who proceeded to get a bit squiffy...

The after effects
A very interesting experiment, with a few negative side effects to be aware of:
1. Stuffing down a very odd combination of food in a very short time can lead to stomach related discomfort...
2. MF does not effect your sense of smell amd it's strange to eat strong smelling foods without tasting them at all.
3. MF can make your burps taste nice - although only until the effects wear off (as certain boy types discovered)...

For those of you who are interested, Miracle Fruit tablets are available from the lovely people at Firebox (and the experiment will also be repeated at InFest, with added Apple Sourz. Bring fruit, not curry.)

I've so wanted to try this for ages!

Apparently it's all the rage with the rich throwing berry parties
with berries going for $100 a berry!

Didn't realise they did the tablet form.

The berries have a really short shelf live, like days, so I expect half the cost is getting them shipped over here that fast.

This is both utterly mental and completely fascinating. Also I am unsurprised to hear that Unicum is still vile with or without miracle berries!

fantastic, can't wait till mine arrive. I can imagine Rennie's to be a winner instead of after dinner mints.

Miracle Fruit tablets? Blimey!

The fruit seems to have suddenly become all the rage - there's a whole bunch of people on my friends group who've recently been delving into it, with interesting reports...

And sadly none close enough or I've always been busy elsewhere to join in. Bastards :P

I've not seen the tablets before; I'm intrigued as to how they stack up against the real fruit :)
